From an Inspiration Photo to a Beautiful Waiting Room — Let's Talk About Color!
Updated: 5 days ago
Have you ever looked at a fabric and thought it was beige, only to have someone else tell you it was gray?
Welcome to my world of helping customers choose waiting room furniture!
One thing I've learned over the years is that we all see colors a little differently. And when you're trying to coordinate 18 waiting room chairs in two different colors and several upholstery options, those little differences really matter.
Recently, I had the pleasure of helping a customer who knew exactly the feeling she wanted for her waiting room. She just needed a little help putting it all together.
It All Started With a Photograph
My customer contacted me after her office owner suggested she give us a call. He had

purchased furniture from us before, and she was now looking to update another office.
She sent me a photo of a waiting room that she absolutely loved.
Her vision was soft, warm, and welcoming, with a beautiful combination of muted sage/eucalyptus and oatmeal-colored chairs.
She also knew a few other things she wanted: black chair frames rather than silver, a combination of vinyl and performance upholstery, and furniture that would stay within her budget.
She had already done her homework, looking at several colors and chair styles on our website.
I love customers who send inspiration photos because they give me a great place to start!
Finding Just the Right Sage and Oatmeal
Now came the fun part.
I started looking through fabric and vinyl options that might give her the look she was trying to achieve.
And this is where color gets interesting!
There are so many shades of sage, eucalyptus, oatmeal, cream, taupe, and beige. Some have gray undertones, others lean green or yellow, and some seem to change depending on the lighting.
Even when two materials are described as the same color, they can look quite different when one is a smooth vinyl and the other has a woven texture.
That's why I always encourage customers to look at actual material samples before making their final selections.
We worked toward a muted, earthy green paired with a soft oatmeal. The goal was to create a little contrast without making the room feel busy.
Choosing Chairs That Fit the Budget
My customer was considering our Shuttle and Tuck chair collections, which offered options within the price range she wanted.
For the Shuttle collection, we explored a combination of standard chairs with arms, armless chairs, and wider bariatric seating.
Her initial plan called for approximately 18 chairs, with roughly two-thirds in vinyl and one-third in performance upholstery.
I really liked the idea of mixing materials.
Vinyl is a practical choice for busy waiting rooms because it's easy to maintain, while textured upholstery can add softness and visual interest.
Combining the two can create a coordinated look without having every chair appear exactly the same.
Then We Had a Little Fun With AI!

Once we had a direction for the chairs and colors, I started experimenting with AI-generated waiting room designs.
I wanted to give her a visual idea of how the sage and oatmeal colors might look together in a finished space.
We tried different seating arrangements, alternating colors, adding tables, rugs, plants, and artwork, and viewing the room from different angles.
And I have to tell you, this has become one of my favorite parts of helping customers!
AI isn't perfect. Sometimes it decides to change the shape of a chair or give it different legs, so these illustrations are not exact representations of the manufacturer's products.
But as a design inspiration tool, it's wonderful!
Instead of looking at two little fabric swatches and trying to imagine an entire waiting room, we can see how the colors might work together in a complete space.
And Here's What We Came Up With!

I love how the two colors work together in these final design concepts.
The oatmeal brings warmth and softness, while the muted green adds just enough color to keep the room interesting.
The black chair frames provide a nice contrast, and the neutral tables, rugs, and greenery help tie everything together.
What I especially like is that the room feels welcoming and comfortable without looking overly decorated.
It's a wonderful example of how you don't need bright colors to create an inviting waiting room.
Sometimes the prettiest spaces are created with just two carefully coordinated colors!
The Most Important Part? It's Her Vision!
One thing I always remind myself when helping customers choose furniture is that my favorite color might not be their favorite color.
I can make suggestions, coordinate samples, recommend chair styles, and help visualize different arrangements.
But ultimately, I want my customers to love the space they're creating.
My job is to help bring their vision to life—not mine.
And that's what makes these projects so much fun!
